LEGISinfo 1st Session, 41st Parliament, 60 Elizabeth II, 2011 house of commons of canadaAn Act to expand the mandate of Service Canada in respect of the death of a Canadian citizen or Canadian resident
Whereas Service Canada was created in 2005 within the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development with the mandate to provide Canadians with a single point of access to a wide range of government services and programs either in person, by phone, by Internet or by mail;
And whereas it would be of great benefit to Canadians to now expand the mandate of Service Canada to provide those Canadians who have recently lost a loved one with a single point of contact for the Government of Canada in respect of all matters relating to the death of that person;
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
SHORT TITLE Short title2. Within one year after this Act comes into force, the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development must implement all meas- ures necessary to establish Service Canada as the single point of contact for the Government of Canada in respect of all matters relating to the death of a Canadian citizen or Canadian resident, so that an individual acting on behalf of the estate of a Canadian citizen or Canadian resident will only need to communicate with Service Canada in order to resolve all outstanding issues that may exist between the estate and the Government of Canada, including — but not limited to — notification of the Canada Revenue Agency and cancellation of a passport, social insurance number or Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan or veterans’ benefits.
REGULATIONS Regulations3. The Governor in Council may make regulations for carrying out the purposes and provisions of this Act.
